Connect the MCP Server

Enable the personal MCP Server under Settings → Personal → AI, copy your server URL, and connect Claude or ChatGPT so the assistant can use your Fuxam permissions.

MCP Server lets you connect an AI assistant (Claude or ChatGPT) to your Fuxam account so the assistant can work with your courses, progress, deadlines, and (when your role allows) create course content — from the AI tool you already use.

You set this up under Settings → Personal → AI. The feature is marked Beta. Your role needs the Use MCP permission (use:mcp), and you must enable MCP for your own account before the server URL appears.

Why it matters

Staff and students already ask AI tools about coursework, deadlines, and content. Without MCP, the assistant has no live access to your Fuxam data. With MCP enabled, you paste one URL into Claude or ChatGPT and follow the on-screen steps so the assistant can call Fuxam tools using your permissions — nothing beyond what you can already do in the product.

Before you start

Requirement Detail
Access Open Settings → Personal → AI
Role permission Your role must include Use MCP (use:mcp). Without it, a notice appears on the page and MCP tools stay blocked even if you flip the switch
Personal opt-in You must enable MCP for your account and save — the setup panel only appears after a successful save
AI client Claude or ChatGPT (setup tabs on the page cover both)

How to connect the MCP Server

Open Settings → Personal → AI.

Turn on the Enable switch for the MCP Server (shown with a Beta badge). Save when the unsaved-changes bar appears — the setup panel uses your saved state, not only the switch position.

After save, open the Server URL section. Copy the URL with Copy (it resolves to your current host + /api/mcp).

In the Setup section, open the Claude or ChatGPT tab. Follow the numbered steps on that tab (and the walkthrough video when available) to paste the URL into your AI client.

In your AI client, complete the connection/sign-in flow so Fuxam can verify you. Then ask something your role can already do in Fuxam (for example, list your courses or deadlines) to confirm the connection works.

What you can ask after connecting

The Build section on the same page lists capability areas based on your permissions (for example courses, content blocks, deadlines, or progress). Treat that list as the source of truth for what your connection can do — it changes with your role.

Best practices

  • Prefer the in-app Copy control so the host matches your tenant.
  • Grant Use MCP only to roles that should let an external AI act with that person's Fuxam rights.
  • Disable the personal switch when you no longer need the connection.
  • Keep an eye on institution AI usage under Settings → Storage & AI if MCP-driven work increases AI spend — see AI usage and Fuxam token budget.

Common pitfalls

Pitfall What happens What to do
Switch on but not saved Setup panel and URL stay hidden Save from the unsaved-changes indicator
Role without Use MCP AI tools get a permission error Ask an admin to grant use:mcp on your role
Wrong host typed by hand Client cannot connect Copy the URL from Settings → Personal → AI
Expecting more rights than in the UI MCP only exposes what your role already allows Check the Build list and your role permissions

FAQ

Where do I enable MCP?

Settings → Personal → AI. Turn on the enable switch, save, then copy the server URL and follow the Claude or ChatGPT setup tab.

What is the server URL?

Your current Fuxam origin plus /api/mcp (for example https://your-university.fuxam.app/api/mcp). Always copy it from the page.

Why do I see a role notice?

Your role is missing Use MCP. The page stays available, but MCP tools will not run until an administrator adds the permission.

Does MCP bypass Fuxam permissions?

No. Every MCP call is checked against your roles in the current institution. The assistant can only do what you are already allowed to do.

Which AI clients are supported?

The setup UI documents Claude and ChatGPT. Other clients are not listed on the page yet.
