Create a curriculum

Create a new curriculum with an initial version from the Curricula table, then build its academic structure.

Creating a curriculum establishes a new academic blueprint in your institution’s Database. The create flow gives you a named curriculum record plus an initial version — the first snapshot you will fill with study periods, elective groups, and module slots. Until you add structure and modules, the curriculum is an empty container ready for program design.

Why it matters

Every study program that students follow through a cohort needs a curriculum version behind it. Creating the curriculum early — ideally once modules and program naming are agreed — gives academic staff a place to encode requirements before the first cohort intakes. Starting with a clean initial version also makes later versioning straightforward when the program evolves (new Prüfungsordnung, accreditation change, or intake-year revision).

How it fits

Prerequisite / related area Why
Modules You will place module versions into the curriculum after creation
Study programs and cohorts You can optionally connect a study program during creation; cohorts later select this curriculum
Curriculum structure explained How study periods, focuses, electives, and credits should be designed
Academic structure Curricula live alongside modules, rooms, and chronology in Database

Key terms

Field / concept Meaning
Curriculum Name The name shown in curricula lists and cohort selectors
Initial Version Name Optional label for the first version (for example, 1.0 or 2025)
Connect Program Optional link from the curriculum to a study program during creation
Initial version The first structure snapshot created with the curriculum — empty until you add periods, groups, and modules

How to create a curriculum

Open the create sheet

Use the create flow on the Curricula page to define a new program structure in your Database.

Go to OrgHub → Database → Curricula.

In the toolbar, select Curriculum. This opens the Create Curricula sheet.

Fill in curriculum details

Enter Curriculum Name — the name shown in curricula lists and cohort selectors.

Optionally enter Initial Version Name — a label for the first version (for example, 1.0).

Optionally select Connect Program — link the curriculum to a study program during creation.

Select Create. Fuxam creates the curriculum with an initial version and opens the curriculum version page.

What happens next

After creation, build the academic structure in this order:

  1. Open Curriculum Structure to add Study Periods, Focuses, and Elective Groups (see Curriculum structure explained).
  2. Return to the curriculum overview to Add Module rows and assign module versions to terms and groups.
  3. Review credit points per study period and against the program target.
  4. When the blueprint is ready, assign it to a cohort.

See Add modules to curriculum for the module-building workflow.

Suggested first study periods

For a three-year bachelor’s with semester structure, create six ordered study periods (Semester 1 … Semester 6) before adding modules. For year-based programs, create Year 1 … Year 3 (or your regulation’s labels). Empty later periods are fine — they keep bulk term mapping consistent as you fill the table.

Best practices

  • Create the curriculum shell when program design is stable enough to name, then flesh out structure before the first cohort goes live.
  • Define study periods and elective groups before adding dozens of modules — mapping columns is faster when the skeleton exists.
  • Connect a study program when the relationship is clear; you can also manage associations later when editing a curriculum.
  • Treat the initial version as the first published blueprint for an intake cycle, not as a disposable draft you will overwrite after students enroll.
  • Prefer one curriculum with multiple versions over many near-duplicate curriculum records for the same degree.

Common pitfalls

  • Creating many near-duplicate curricula instead of versions of one curriculum — versions keep history and cohort links clearer.
  • Leaving Curriculum Structure empty and adding modules first — term and elective mapping becomes harder without periods and groups.
  • Assigning an unfinished curriculum to a live cohort — students receive incomplete study plans.
  • Using vague version labels (Version 1, New) that staff cannot match to an intake year later.

FAQ

Do I need modules before I create a curriculum?

No. You can create the curriculum and initial version first, then add modules and place them in the structure. Having key modules ready speeds up the next steps.

Is Connect Program required?

No. Connect Program is optional during creation. You can link or adjust the study program association later when editing curriculum metadata.

What if I leave Initial Version Name blank?

The curriculum is still created with an initial version. Providing a clear label (for example, 1.0 or an intake year) helps when you later switch versions in the header selector.

When should I create a second curriculum instead of a second version?

Create a new curriculum when it is a genuinely different program blueprint (different degree, different shared structure). Create a new version when the same program evolves for a new intake or regulation year.
