Recover a deleted course from Backups
Under Settings → Data Management & Reporting → Backups, find courses deleted in the last 30 days, see how much time is left and recover a course before it is gone for good.
Backups is where deleted courses wait for 30 days before they are gone for good. You find it under Settings → Data Management & Reporting → Backups, and from there you can recover a course that was deleted by mistake.
Why it matters
Courses are deleted in bulk from the Courses table, and one wrong checkbox is enough to remove a course that is still in use. Backups gives you a safety net: as long as you act within 30 days, the course and its content come back with one click.
Before you start
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Permission to open the page | Your role needs the Backups settings permission (read-write:settings-backups). Without it, Backups does not appear under Settings → Data Management & Reporting |
| Permission to list and recover | Your role also needs the permission to recover backups (recover:backups). Without it the course list cannot load |
| A deleted course | Only courses deleted in the last 30 days are listed |
What happens when a course is deleted
When someone deletes a course in Campus Management → Courses:
- The course and everything below it in your course structure is moved to Backups. It disappears from the Courses table and from the course structure.
- The roles and permissions people had in that course are removed.
- The course stays in Backups for 30 days. The Deletion in column counts down the time that is left.
How to recover a deleted course
Open Settings → Data Management & Reporting → Backups. The Course Backups section lists every course deleted in the last 30 days, or shows No Course Backups if there are none.
Find the course. Type part of its name into the search field, or hover over the name to see a short preview of the course.
Check the Deletion in column. It shows how much time is left, for example "12 days". In the last day the time turns red.
Click Recover at the end of the course's row. A dialog opens that asks whether you want to recover the course, with the course name in its title.
Read the note in the dialog, then click Recover Course. The course disappears from the list and is active again in Campus Management → Courses.
After you recover a course
| What | What you need to do |
|---|---|
| Position in your course structure | The recovered course is placed at the top of the structure hierarchy, so administrators can reach it. Move it back to its original place by hand if needed |
| Roles and permissions | Roles and permissions that users had in the course are not restored. Add teachers and participants again, see Manage enrollments |
| Content | The course's content comes back together with the course |
Best practices
- Check Backups as soon as someone reports a missing course. The 30 days start at the moment of deletion.
- Before you recover, note who taught and attended the course, so you can add them again quickly.
- Prefer archiving over deleting for courses from past terms, see Archive a course.
Common pitfalls
| Pitfall | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Course deleted more than 30 days ago | It is not in the list and cannot be recovered | Recover courses within 30 days; archive instead of deleting when in doubt |
| Backups missing in Settings | You cannot open the page | Ask an administrator to add the Backups settings permission to your role |
| List does not load | You see an error instead of courses | Your role also needs the permission to recover backups (recover:backups) |
| Participants missing after recovery | Nobody can see the course except administrators | Roles are not restored; add people again in Manage enrollments |
| Course is in an unexpected place | It sits at the top of the course structure | Move it back to its original position by hand |
