Pin an announcement
Pin a published announcement so it appears in the dashboard pinned banner for your audience, with visual emphasis in the Info Hub feed.
Pinning highlights one published Info Hub announcement above the rest of the feed and surfaces it in an expandable pinned banner at the top of users’ Home dashboard. It is the right tool when a single message must stay visible without republishing or bumping the feed — campus closures, active incident instructions, registration deadlines, or policy changes that every affected user should see on login.
Pinning does not change who can see the post; it only changes how prominently the post appears for users already in the audience. It also does not replace priority and notifications — an Urgent pinned item combines red visual emphasis on Home with the pinned banner behaviour.
Why it matters
Feed-based communication suffers from recency bias: important posts scroll away as new ones arrive. Email and chat have the opposite problem — they interrupt but lack a single institutional source of truth. Pinning bridges that gap for one authoritative post at a time: readers see it on Home before they navigate elsewhere, can expand the full content in place, and still find the post at the top of the Info Hub feed with a Pinned badge.
Because only published posts can be pinned, pinning is explicitly a “this is live and important right now” signal — not a draft-review mechanism.
How it fits
Pinning is optional and applied after (or during) publish. It works alongside:
| Feature | Relationship to pinning |
|---|---|
| Priority | Urgent pinned posts use a red banner on Home; other priorities use standard pinned styling |
| Audience targeting | Banner and feed pin are visible only to users in the audience |
| Read receipts | Expanding the pinned banner on Home marks the post as read |
| Search and filters | Pinned: Yes filter helps editors audit what is currently highlighted |
What pinning does
- Dashboard banner — The pinned announcement is shown in an expandable banner at the top of Home. Readers can expand it to read the full content without leaving the dashboard.
- Visual emphasis — Pinned cards in the Info Hub feed show a pin badge. Urgent priority pinned items use a red banner on Home.
- Ordering — Pinned announcements are sorted above unpinned items in the Info Hub feed.
Pinning does not change who can see the post; visibility is still controlled by audience settings.
How to pin or unpin a single announcement
Open the announcement detail page, or locate the post on the Info Hub card feed.
Choose Pin to Dashboard from the actions menu (or Unpin if already pinned).
On the create or edit form, you can also enable Pin to dashboard before saving.
From an announcement card on the main feed, use the overflow menu Pin to Dashboard / Unpin when you have permission.
Bulk pin
Bulk pin is available when exactly one published announcement is selected in a bulk-actions context (for example, on table views that support selection). The bulk menu shows Pin to Dashboard or Unpin for that single row.
Selecting multiple announcements at once does not offer a multi-pin bulk action — pin each post individually, or pin one published post via bulk selection.
Best practices
- Pin one clear message at a time. Multiple competing pinned banners dilute attention. Unpin or archive superseded notices when the situation resolves.
- Pair pinning with the right priority. Pinning a Low priority post is possible but may confuse readers who expect pinned content to matter; align priority with the banner’s importance.
- Confirm audience before pinning. A pinned banner on Home for the wrong cohort is highly visible — review targeting first.
- Unpin when the message expires. Leaving stale pins trains users to ignore the banner.
- Use the Pinned filter when auditing active pins across many posts — see Search announcements.
Common pitfalls
| Pitfall | What happens | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Pinning a Draft | Pin actions are not available for drafts | Publish first, then pin |
| No pin permission | Pin menu items are hidden | Ask an administrator to grant permission to pin announcements |
| Expecting pin to widen audience | Only existing audience sees the banner | Fix visibility separately |
| Selecting multiple posts for bulk pin | Multi-pin is not offered | Pin one post at a time |
| Forgetting to unpin after crisis ends | Outdated instructions stay on Home | Set a reminder to unpin or archive |
FAQ
Can more than one announcement be pinned at once?
The documentation describes single-post pin actions and bulk pin for exactly one selected row. Plan around one primary pinned message for maximum clarity on Home.
Does pinning send a notification?
Pinning itself does not trigger notifications. Notifications are controlled by priority and the notify toggle at publish time.
Does expanding the pinned banner count as a read?
Yes. Expanding the pinned banner on Home marks the pinned post as read, the same as opening the detail page. See Read receipts and analytics.
Can I pin from the create form?
Yes. Enable Pin to dashboard before saving, provided the post is Published and you have permission to pin announcements.
