Preview the student Learning Journey tab — Start or Continue learning, progress statuses, due dates, and locked steps with Unlocked teacher preview mode.
Teachers with permission to create and edit learning journey content can switch to Student View inside the Learning Journey tab to see exactly what enrolled students experience — without leaving the editor.
Students use the same tab directly. Content is organized into sections, with optional standalone blocks outside any section.

Why it matters
What teachers intend (a clear weekly path) is not always what students perceive (locked steps, draft content, or a start date still in the future). Previewing as a student catches those mismatches before announcements go out.
For students, the journey is the primary map of the course: progress counts, due dates, and conditions turn a list of materials into a paced academic commitment.

Open the learning journey
Open the course and click the Learning Journey tab in the course navigation.
As a student, click Start learning if you have not begun yet, or Continue learning to jump to where you left off.
As a teacher previewing the journey, switch to Student View at the top of the editing interface.
Track progress
A progress summary at the top shows how many blocks you have completed out of the total — for example, 12 of 30 blocks. Within each section, you can see how far through that section you are.
Each block shows a visual status:

| Finished | The block is complete. |
| Missed deadline | The block had a due date that has passed without completion. |
Progress counts only published steps students can actually work on. Draft and disabled blocks stay out of the student view entirely.
Locked and unlocked steps
Some blocks are not available until conditions are met:
- Start date — the block is hidden or locked until the configured start date.
- Dependencies — the block requires one or more earlier blocks to be completed first. Locked blocks show that they depend on previous content.
- Publish status — students only see blocks that are Published or Coming Soon. Draft and Disabled blocks are hidden from students.
Treat due dates as academic commitments even when a late block can still be opened — institutional late-work policy may still apply to grading. For Hand-in submission steps, see Submit a hand-in.
Student vs teacher preview
Read-only progress view with Start learning / Continue learning, section progress, statuses, and normal lock rules. You complete published content; you do not change structure or conditions.
Student View mirrors the student layout. Unlocked preview mode lets you inspect later blocks without finishing dependencies. Editing still happens in Table View and Path View — see Edit a learning journey.
Best practices
- Preview with Unlocked off first, so you experience the same locks students will hit.
- Announce new weeks only after Student View looks correct (titles, order, Coming Soon vs Published).
- Complete dependency chains in order — skipping ahead is often blocked by design.
- Align journey deadlines with calendar sessions so assessment and attendance weeks do not collide — see Calendar and attendance.
Common pitfalls

FAQ
Can students open blocks in any order?
Only if teachers have not set conditions. Many journeys require earlier blocks first. Locked blocks stay unavailable until dependencies are met.
Does Student View change live student data?
No. It is a preview for teachers with permission to edit the learning journey. Students always follow normal lock and publish rules.
