Edit a learning journey
Reorder sections and blocks, update titles dates and conditions, control publish status, and preview changes in Student View before students see them.
After the initial structure is in place, use the Learning Journey editing interface to refine content, change order, and control when blocks become visible to students. Editing is ongoing work across a term: new weeks appear, due dates shift, and conditions are tuned as teaching unfolds.
Why it matters
Small structural mistakes — a quiz before its reading, a due date that clashes with an exam week, or a draft block left unpublished — create support tickets and missed learning. Controlled editing (reorder, update settings, then preview) keeps the journey aligned with the module plan without surprising enrolled students mid-week.
Publish status is especially important: it is the gate between “teachers are still building” and “students can see this step.”

Reorder sections and blocks
Order defines the natural path students scan — and often what “previous content” means for dependencies. After a large reshuffle, always recheck Path View.
Open the course and go to the Learning Journey tab.
Switch to Table View.
Drag a block using the handle on the left side of its row to move it up, down, or into another section.
You can also rearrange blocks in Path View when reviewing dependencies.
Edit block content and settings
Open a block to change what students read or submit, and when they can access it.
In Table View, click the block you want to change, or open it from Student View or Path View.
Update the title, description, dates, conditions, or block-specific settings (for example, quiz questions or uploaded files).
Save your changes.
For blocks synced from the Content Database, some fields may be locked on the course copy. Edit the source block in the database and sync, or break the link if the course copy should diverge. See Edit a content block and Reuse content blocks.
Learning journey settings
The Settings tab lets you configure journey-level options such as linked courses and the journey source. It is only visible to users with the read:layer permission. Without that permission, the tab is hidden in navigation and any direct URL to the settings page redirects to Table View.
Publish status
Each content block has a publish status that controls student visibility:

Set publish status when creating or editing a block in Table View or the block detail sheet.
When to use each status

Preview before students see changes
Switch to Student View to confirm layout, lock behavior, and progress display. Use Unlocked preview mode to inspect any block without satisfying dependencies.
Teachers with permission to edit the learning journey can also follow View as a student for the full student-facing status model. The student handbook page is Follow the learning journey (students).
Best practices
- Batch edits for a week, preview once, then publish — avoid drip-editing live published titles mid-day unless necessary.
- Prefer Coming Soon over silent empty sections when you want students to know content is on the way.
- After changing conditions, walk the dependency chain in Path View from first to last locked block.
- Treat synced database blocks as shared assets: edit at the source when multiple courses should stay aligned.
- When grading has started, expect limited edits on Published blocks — use Review submissions and grade for student work rather than restructuring the block casually.

FAQ
Can I edit a published block after students have started?
Often yes for title and description, but grading and submissions may restrict deeper changes. Prefer drafting structural changes offline (new draft block) when possible.
What is the difference between Draft and Disabled?
Draft is for work in progress (editors only, still editable). Disabled hides the block from students and is not editable in the same way — use it to withdraw a step.
Where do grades for edited blocks live?
Gradable activity still flows through grading and analytics. Publishing grades is separate from publishing a content block.
I have course management access but cannot edit blocks — why?
Course Management access (read:course-management) grants you the ability to open and view any learning journey, but editing blocks requires the write:learning-journey permission scoped to the specific course. Contact your course administrator to have that permission assigned to your role.
