Create a content block

Add reusable blocks to the OrgHub Content Blocks library, build inside a learning journey database, or save existing course blocks to the database.

The Content Blocks tab stores individual blocks that can be copied or synced into many course learning journeys. Create blocks here when the same activity — a video, quiz, or hand-in template — should be reused without duplicating manual work across sections, semesters, or faculties.

Why it matters

Course teams often rebuild identical activities: the same safety briefing video, the same formative quiz, the same submission rubric. Central creation turns those into institutional assets. Authors maintain one authoritative block; course editors pull it in when structuring their learning journey. When content improves, linked copies can receive updates through sync instead of manual re-entry in every course.

How it fits

Creation in the database is only the first step in a longer workflow. Library blocks are content masters; courses apply delivery settings (due dates, conditions, publish status) on the copy.

Path When to use it
Content Blocks library One activity reused across unrelated courses or journeys
Learning journey database A full structured path where sections and blocks stay together
Save to database from a course You already built something in a pilot course and want to promote it to the library

See Add a content block for block types and settings when adding directly inside a course without the database.

Key concepts

Term Meaning
Library block A standalone reusable block in the Content Blocks tab — no sections, no course enrollment
Master content Title, files, questions, and other block-specific material stored in the database
Course-specific settings Due dates, start dates, access conditions, and publish status — configured on the course copy, not in the library

Create a block in the library

Go to OrgHub → Management → Course Management and open the Content Blocks tab.

Click Add block (or the equivalent create action in the toolbar).

Choose a block type from the picker — Files, Video, Hand-in, Test, Workbench, and others. Section blocks are not available in the library.

Enter a title and block-specific settings (description, files, questions, and so on).

Save the block. It appears in the Content Blocks table.

Library blocks are created without course-specific settings such as due dates, start dates, access conditions, or publish status — those are configured on the course copy after import.

Create blocks inside a learning journey database

You can also build blocks as part of a full learning journey database when the entire path — sections, order, and blocks together — should be shared:

Open the Learning Journeys tab and create or open a database.

In Table View, add sections and blocks the same way you would in a course learning journey.

Link courses in the database Settings and sync the full journey to them.

This path mirrors Create a learning journey inside a course, but the result is a master stored in OrgHub. Linked courses receive the full structure on sync; they cannot edit synced journey content locally.

Save existing course blocks to the database

From a course Learning Journey editor, select one or more blocks and use Save to database:

  • Copy only — creates independent copies in the library. Future edits in the library or course do not affect each other.
  • Copy and link — creates linked copies so future database edits can sync back to the course blocks.

Best practices

  • Build generic, reusable master content in the library; leave cohort-specific scheduling to the course copy after import.
  • Prefer the library for high-churn shared assets (standard quizzes, policy PDFs); keep experimental or highly localized material directly in the course.
  • After creating library blocks, document related databases with tags so browse and filter stay manageable.

Common pitfalls

  • Expecting library blocks to appear in courses automatically — you must import or sync them into each target learning journey.
  • Setting due dates in the library — those fields belong on the course copy; the library stores shared learning material only.
  • Needing sections in the library — use a learning journey database instead; the Content Blocks tab is a flat table.

FAQ

Can I create every block type in the library?

Most activity types are available — Files, Video, Hand-in, Test, Workbench, and others. Section blocks are not available in the library; structure sections inside a learning journey database or directly in a course.

Should I create in the library or directly in the course?

Use the library when the same block will appear in multiple courses or must be maintained centrally. Build directly in the course when content is unique to one offering.
