Duplicate a course
Copy one or more courses with their learning journey content and settings from the OrgHub Courses table — without copying enrollments or module links.
Duplicating a course creates independent copies of selected offerings — each with its own course code, empty enrollment list, and full clone of learning journey content and settings from the source. Institutions use duplication for term rollover (last year’s syllabus becomes this year’s starting point), template forks (a master course spawns department variants), and sandboxes (faculty experiment without touching the live offering).
Duplication is faster and safer than manual rebuild when structure matters but participants and academic links must start fresh.
Why it matters
Rebuilding a multi-block learning journey every academic year wastes faculty and instructional-design time. Yet copying enrollments forward would assign the wrong students; copying module links would misattribute academic progress. Duplication strikes the balance: content and configuration travel; people and database links do not.
For brand-new offerings with no prior material, Create a course remains the right path. For repeatable programs tied to modules and cohorts, duplicate-then-rename-then-link is the standard term-prep workflow.
How it fits
| After duplicate | Next step |
|---|---|
| Rename and adjust metadata | Edit a course |
| Review capacity and tabs | Course settings |
| Connect to academic structure | Link courses to a database |
| Add students and teachers | Manage enrollments or Bulk-enroll |
| Retire the old offering | Archive a course |
| Teach in the new copy | LMS Courses |
Key concepts
| Concept | Behavior on duplicate |
|---|---|
| Independence | Each copy is a new course record with a new generated code |
| Name suffix | (Copy) is appended to the original name until you rename |
| Content clone | All learning journey content blocks copy to the new course |
| Settings clone | Feature toggles, journey mode, capacity, and related settings copy |
| Enrollment reset | No users carry over — intentional for clean term starts |
| Link reset | Module version links stay on the source only |
How to duplicate courses from OrgHub
Go to OrgHub → Management → Courses.
Select one or more courses using the row checkboxes.
Open the bulk actions menu and choose Duplicate.
Confirm the duplication. Fuxam creates a copy for each selected course and shows a success message when finished.
You need write access on each source course’s structure (or organization-wide permission to create courses in course management).
What is copied
Each duplicate is a new course with:
- Name — the original name with
(Copy)appended. - Course code — a newly generated unique code (not the same as the source).
- Description, banner, icon, and appointment color
- Tags assigned to the source course
- Course settings — feature toggles, learning journey mode, capacity, and dynamic banner setting
- Learning journey content — all content blocks from the source course
- Course goal — attendance and points targets, when configured on the source
Because content is copied, the duplicate is not empty — you generally cannot link it to a module version afterward unless your workflow creates an empty shell another way. Plan academic linking carefully for term rollover: many institutions duplicate for content continuity and maintain module links on offerings created empty for the new catalogue year, or they link before content is added on net-new courses.
What is not copied
The duplicate does not include:
- Enrolled users — the copy starts with no participants.
- Database module links — linked module versions stay on the original course; connect the copy separately if needed and if linking rules allow.
How to rename and finalize the copy
After duplication:
- Open the new course from the Courses table (look for the
(Copy)suffix in the name column). - Go to Course Settings and update Course name, Description, Capacity, and other details.
- Review Course Features and ratings so they still match how the new term will run.
- Edit the Course code column in OrgHub if you need a specific identifier.
See Edit a course and Course settings for field-level guidance.
Best practices
- Duplicate before the source term ends so faculty can refine the copy while the original remains the live reference.
- Rename immediately — remove
(Copy)and add term or section identifiers so Browse & manage courses stays readable. - Review capacity for the new cohort size — copied capacity may not match next year’s enrollment plan.
- Re-link to the current module version when cohort curricula reference a new year’s version and linking is still possible — see Manage module versions.
- Bulk-enroll the new cohort after setup; never assume students transfer from the source course.
- Archive the source after the term if it should not appear in active lists — see Archive a course.
Common pitfalls
| Pitfall | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Students cannot see the new course | Enroll them in the copy — duplication does not enroll anyone |
| Progress not tracked academically | Link the copy to a module version when eligible |
| Duplicate failed for one course in a batch | Check write access on that source; others may still have copied successfully |
Two (Copy) courses are confusing |
Rename and retag before sharing links with teachers |
| Capacity wrong for new term | Update Capacity in Course Settings before enrollment |
FAQ
Should I duplicate or create from scratch?
Duplicate when journey structure, goals, and settings from an existing course are still valid. Create when the offering is genuinely new with no template.
Will duplicating affect the original course?
No. The source course, its enrollments, and its module links remain unchanged. The copy is a separate record.
Can I duplicate an archived course?
If your role can see and select the archived row in the Courses table, duplication should be available — filter by Archived status in Browse & manage courses to locate it.
