Monitor progress

Track learning journey completion per user per block and across the course — Users Progress sheet block analytics and course Analytics User Progress.

Teachers and administrators can monitor how students move through a learning journey at both the individual and course level — per content block, per user, and across the whole course. Progress data answers operational questions: who is stuck, which early block blocks everyone else, and whether the cohort is on pace for the term.

Why it matters

In a university module, “completion” is rarely just a percentage on a dashboard. Advisors need to know whether a student finished the prerequisite reading; exam offices care whether formative blocks were attempted; teachers need early warning when an entire cohort stalls on one step.

Monitoring connects the journey to grading and analytics: block analytics show completion and grades for one step; course analytics summarize engagement for the offering.

How it fits

Related area Relationship
View as a student How students see the same statuses and locks
Content block analytics Completion, ratings, grades, learn time for one block
Course analytics Summary, visits, engagement, participation, user progress
View and publish course grades Grades are related but published separately from progress
Follow the learning journey (students) Student experience of progress counts

Key concepts

Term Meaning
Finished / In progress / Not started Per-block status for a user
Progress sheet Per-user view listing every block and that user’s status
Block analytics Aggregate completion and related metrics for one content block
User Progress (course analytics) Distribution of users across journey stages for the whole course

Per-user progress in the Users tab

Use this when you need to coach or intervene for one student — for example after an advising meeting or a missed deadline.

Open the course and go to the Users tab.

Find the participant in the user table.

Open the Progress column entry for that user (or the progress action in their row).

The progress sheet shows:

  • A summary such as 12 of 30 blocks completed
  • Counts for Finished, In progress, and Not started
  • A searchable list of every content block with that user’s status on each step

Use this view to follow up with individual students who are stuck on a specific block.

Per-block completion and analytics

Use this when a step looks problematic for many students — low completion on an early reading or quiz often signals a blocking condition, a confusing title, or a start date mismatch.

Open the Learning Journey tab and select a content block.

Open the block overview and switch to the Analytics tab (or analytics view for that block).

Content block analytics show completion counts, ratings, grade distribution (for gradable blocks), and learn time. A low completion rate on an early block may indicate a blocking condition or unclear instructions.

See Content block analytics for details.

Course-wide progress and completion rates

Use this for program leads and course owners who need a cohort-level picture rather than one student at a time.

Open the course and click the Analytics tab (requires Analytics enabled for your institution and permission to view it).

Review Summary for overall completion and enrollment metrics.

Open the User Progress section to see how many users are at each stage of the learning journey.

See Course analytics for the full analytics sections.

Best practices

  • Check early-block analytics in the first weeks — problems compound when later steps depend on unfinished prerequisites.
  • Pair progress follow-up with the student’s view of locks and due dates — see View as a student.
  • Distinguish “opened” from “finished” when talking to students (especially Hand-in and Test blocks).
  • Use course User Progress before exam boards or mid-term reviews to spot at-risk clusters, then drill into individual progress sheets.
  • After you redesign a stuck block, recheck block analytics a few days later to confirm completion improved.

Common pitfalls

Pitfall What to try
Empty analytics Confirm Analytics is enabled for your institution and you have permission to view it; ensure students are enrolled
Progress stuck at In progress Student may not have fully completed the activity (for example submitted a hand-in)
High Not started on week 1 Start dates, draft publish status, or enrollment timing
One user far behind Open their Progress sheet and check locked dependencies

FAQ

Is progress the same as a published grade?

No. Progress tracks completion of journey steps. Grades are entered and published separately — see View and publish course grades.

Can students see each other’s progress?

Students see their own progress in the Learning Journey tab. Course-wide and per-user progress sheets are for teachers and administrators with appropriate access.

Where should I start if the whole cohort is behind?

Start with block analytics on early required steps, then course User Progress, then sample individual progress sheets for patterns (locks, missed deadlines, unpublished content).
