Manage channels
Rename group chats, manage members and roles, mute notifications, pin conversations, and remove chats from your list in Fuxam.
Managing a channel is about keeping it useful over time: giving it a clear name, controlling who belongs, and tuning how much it demands your attention. What you can do depends on the chat type — direct, group, or course — and on your role within it (Member, Moderator, or Creator).
Channel management options depend on the chat type and your role in the channel.
Why it matters
Chat conversations accumulate. Without a little maintenance, your sidebar fills with stale groups, noisy channels bury the ones that matter, and it becomes unclear who is even in a conversation. The actions on this page — renaming, muting, pinning, adding and removing members, and clearing out chats you no longer need — are what keep Chat calm and navigable rather than overwhelming.
Roles in a channel

Direct messages have no roles — they are simply between two people. Course channels derive much of their membership from course enrollment rather than manual management.
Rename a group chat
Group chat names can be changed by channel admins (moderators or the creator):
Open the group channel.
Open Channel details from the header menu (the ⋯ menu).
Edit Chat name and click Save.
Direct messages use the other person’s name and cannot be renamed. Course channel names follow the course or sub-chat name set by your institution.
Manage members
In group and course channels, open Channel details to:
- View members — see who is in the channel and their role (Member, Moderator, or Creator).
- Add members — invite additional people from your organization.
- Leave channel — exit a group you no longer need (group chats only; you must be re-invited to rejoin).
Course chats may include members automatically from course enrollment. Removing someone from a course chat may require changes in user or course management rather than in the chat itself — see User Management and Course management.
Mute notifications
Mute a conversation when you want to stay in the channel but stop unread badges and notifications:
In the chat sidebar, open the row menu (the ⋯ menu) for the conversation, or open the header menu inside the channel.
Click Mute.
To turn alerts back on, choose Unmute from the same menu.
Muted channels are excluded from your total unread count on the main Chat sidebar badge. You can still open the conversation and read messages manually. Muting is the healthy alternative to leaving a busy-but-useful channel just to escape the notifications.
Remove a conversation from your list
For direct messages and some channels, use Delete Chat from the conversation’s sidebar row menu (the ⋯ menu):
- Delete Chat removes the conversation from your sidebar. For direct messages, the other person still has access to the thread.
- Group owners can permanently delete a group for all members from group settings (Delete Group).
This is how you clear chats you no longer need in your list. There is no separate Archive action in the current UI.
Other channel actions
From the sidebar row menu or header menu you can also:
- Mark Read / Mark Unread — adjust read state without opening the thread.
- Pin a conversation so it stays at the top of the Pinned section.
- Search in channel — find text inside the current conversation.
Choosing the right action
Too noisy but still useful? Mute it. You stay a member and keep the history, without the badge and notifications.
Genuinely finished? For a personal one-to-one, Delete Chat clears it from your list. For a whole group, only the creator should use Delete Group.
FAQ
What is the difference between muting and deleting a chat?
Muting keeps you in the conversation but silences its badges and notifications. Deleting removes the conversation from your sidebar (for direct messages, the other person keeps their copy). Muting is reversible with Unmute.
Can I archive a conversation?
There is no separate Archive action in the current UI. Use Mute to quiet a channel you want to keep, or Delete Chat to remove it from your list.
Why can't I rename this chat?
Direct messages take the other person’s name and can’t be renamed, and course channels follow the institution’s course naming. Only group channels can be renamed, by a moderator or the creator.
