Find and filter conversations

Browse, filter, and search your chat channels on the Chat tab in Fuxam Mobile — and understand how the list relates to Fuxam Web Base Chat.

The Chat tab in Fuxam Mobile is your conversation inbox: every direct message, group channel, and course channel you belong to appears here, ordered for quick access. An unread badge on the tab icon shows how many messages you have not read yet, so you can spot new activity without opening each thread.

Fuxam Mobile Chat mirrors the same institution-wide messaging available in Fuxam Base Chat on the web platform. Conversations you start or receive on one device appear on the other — the mobile app is optimized for on-the-go reading and replying, not a separate messaging system.

Why it matters

University life moves fast. Between lectures, labs, and office hours, you need to find the right conversation without scrolling through dozens of threads. Filters and search let you narrow the list to direct messages with a tutor, a group project channel, or a course-wide discussion. That saves time and reduces the risk of posting in the wrong channel.

For staff, a well-organized inbox supports timely responses to students. For students, it keeps academic conversations separate from personal messaging apps and tied to the people and courses in Fuxam.

How it fits

Related area Relationship
Chat in Fuxam Base The web home for the same messaging system — sidebar groups, channels, and unread counts
Start a new chat Create direct, group, or course conversations from the + button
Send messages and use message actions Open any conversation from this list to read and reply
Use the notification center Push notifications and the notification center alert you to new messages

When you tap a conversation in the list, you open the thread where you can send messages, view pinned content, and access shared files. The list itself is for discovery and navigation — not for composing.

Key concepts

Term Meaning
Conversation Any chat thread — direct, group, or course-linked.
Channel Another word for a conversation in the Chat tab list.
Filter tab A category control at the top of the list (All, Direct, Groups, Courses).
Unread badge A count on the Chat tab icon showing messages you have not read.

Filter your list

Use the filter tabs at the top of the channel list to show only the type of conversation you need:

Filter What it shows
All Every conversation
Direct One-to-one messages
Groups Group chats
Courses Course-related channels (when enabled for your institution)

Switch filters when you know the conversation type but not the exact name — for example, Direct when you expect a reply from a specific lecturer, or Courses when you are looking for a module discussion.

Tap the search field and type a name or keyword to narrow the list. Search is useful when you remember part of a person’s name, a group title, or a course label but the conversation is buried lower in the list.

If nothing matches, try a different search term or clear the search to see all conversations again. Spelling variants and partial names often work; if you still find nothing, the conversation may not exist yet — see Start a new chat.

Open a conversation and use header tools

Tap any conversation to open it. From the conversation header you can access:

  • Members — see who is in the channel
  • Pinned Messages — view messages pinned in this channel
  • Shared Files — browse images, files, and GIFs shared in the conversation

These header tools are the same entry points described in Send messages and use message actions. Use them after you have found the right thread.

Best practices

  • Check the unread badge on the Chat tab when you open the app — it is the fastest signal that someone is waiting for a reply.
  • Use Direct or Courses filters before searching when you already know the conversation type.
  • Pull to refresh after someone tells you they added you to a new group or course channel.
  • Open Pinned Messages from the header when you need a link or announcement someone pinned earlier instead of scrolling the full history.

Common pitfalls

Issue What to try
Expected conversation missing Pull down to refresh; confirm you are on the right filter tab; check that course chat is enabled for your institution.
Search returns nothing Clear the search field; try a shorter keyword or the person’s family name.
List seems out of date Chat requires an active internet connection — check connectivity and refresh.
Cannot find course channel Switch to the Courses filter; course chat must be enabled for your institution.

FAQ

Do conversations sync between mobile and web?

Yes. Fuxam Mobile Chat and Fuxam Base Chat share the same conversations. Messages you read on one device are reflected on the other once synced.

Why do I see a Courses filter but no course channels?

Course channels appear only when course chat is enabled for your institution and you are enrolled or added to those courses. If the filter is empty, ask your administrator or check course enrollment.

How do I start a new conversation?

Tap the + button on the Chat tab — see Start a new chat.
