Chat

Fuxam's real-time messaging in Fuxam Base — direct messages, group channels, and course channels, with unread tracking and drafts.

Chat is Fuxam’s real-time messaging feature. Use it for quick conversations with colleagues and students — direct messages, group channels, and course-linked chats — without leaving the platform. Because it is part of Fuxam Base, Chat spans the whole institution rather than living inside any single course, so the same conversation list follows you wherever you work in Fuxam Web.

Why it matters

Learning and administration generate a constant stream of small, time-sensitive questions: “Which room are we in?”, “Can you send me that file?”, “Is the deadline still Friday?” Email is too heavy for these, and hallway conversations don’t scale or leave a record. Chat gives everyone a fast, in-context channel for exactly this kind of exchange, keeping coordination inside Fuxam — next to the courses, calendars, and people it concerns — instead of scattered across personal messaging apps.

How it fits

Chat is one of Fuxam’s three communication channels, alongside the Info Hub (announcements) and email. Within the LMS, chat also appears in a course context; the Communication section documents chat, emails, and the Info Hub as they relate to a course, and the LMS chat page now points here for the full reference. On a phone, the same conversations are available in the Fuxam mobile app — see Start a new chat.

Open Chat

Click Chat in the left sidebar to open the messaging panel.

When Chat is active, a rolling sidebar lists your conversations grouped into Pinned, Course Channels, Group Channels, and Direct Messages. Select a conversation to read and reply in the main panel.

Key concepts

Term Meaning
Direct message A one-to-one conversation with another person in your institution.
Group channel A named channel you create with selected members.
Course channel A chat tied to a course enrollment, created automatically when course chat is enabled.
Pinned Conversations you have pinned to the top of the sidebar for quick access.
Moderator and Creator Elevated roles in a channel that can manage members and settings.
Muted A conversation you stay in but silence; excluded from your unread total.

Unread indicators

Unread messages are counted in several places:

  • The Chat sidebar item shows a numeric badge with your total unread count across all non-muted conversations.
  • Each conversation in the chat list can show its own unread badge until you open it.
  • Opening a conversation marks its messages as read.

Muted conversations are excluded from the sidebar total, which is why muting a noisy channel is the right move when you want to stay a member without the badge pressure.

Chat vs email

Fuxam also supports formal email from user profiles and OrgHub workflows (for example, user mailing or application communications). Use the tools for the job:

Chat Email
Best for Quick back-and-forth, team coordination, course discussions Formal notices, external recipients, audit trails
Speed Real-time; in-app and push notifications Asynchronous; delivered to inboxes
Audience People in your institution’s chat directory Anyone with a valid email address
Where it lives Chat sidebar and course chat tabs User Email tab and dedicated email flows

Chat is for day-to-day messaging inside Fuxam. Email is for structured outbound communication where you need a traditional message record. For one-way official notices to a whole audience, reach for the Info Hub instead.

Draft messages

If you start typing but navigate away, Fuxam saves your draft. The draft is restored the next time you open that conversation. Open Drafts from the chat route when you have saved drafts waiting to send.
