View and publish course grades

Open the Users Grades sub-tab, read grade status across every gradable block, publish or unpublish grades, and filter the grade grid.

The Grades view is the central grade book for a course in FuxamLMS. You reach it through Users in the course navigation, then the Grades sub-tab at the top of the Users page. From here you see every gradable content block, the grade assigned to each student, and whether each mark is still private or already published.

This view complements — but does not replace — block-level review. Teachers often enter grades while reviewing a single submission in the block Users overview (see Review submissions and grade); the Grades tab is where you audit the full matrix, filter by cohort or block type, and publish or unpublish results for the entire course at once.

Why it matters

Universities need one place to answer: Has every student been marked?, Are any grades still hidden?, and Is it safe to release results to the cohort? A course-wide grade grid makes inconsistencies visible before students compare notes.

Separating entering grades from publishing them protects academic fairness. Teaching teams can finish marking, moderate outliers, and align with module rules before a single Publish all Grades action makes results official for learners. Unpublishing remains available when corrections are required — at the cost of temporarily locking content blocks until the issue is resolved.

In administrative terms, LMS course grades record outcomes on learning-journey content blocks. They are distinct from formal module exams managed in the CMS Exam Center — see How it fits below.

How it fits

Related area Relationship
Open a course Users and Grades are sub-tabs inside course navigation
Review submissions and grade Primary workflow for reading submissions and entering grades per block
Content block analytics Completion and grade distribution for one block after release
Monitor progress Journey completion is separate from published grades
Grade and manage an exam Formal OrgHub exams — parallel path for module-level assessment

Key concepts

Term Meaning
Grade grid The matrix of students and gradable content blocks in the Grades view
Ungraded The student has submitted work but no grade has been entered yet
Graded but unpublished A grade exists but the student cannot see it yet
Published The grade has been shared with the student
Publish all Grades Releases every entered grade in the course at once
Unpublish Grades Hides published grades from students and unlocks content blocks for editing

How to open the Grades view

Open the course.

Click Users in the course navigation.

Select the Grades sub-tab at the top of the Users page.

The Grades view lists all gradable content blocks on the left and the enrolled students across the top (or in rows depending on the view). Each cell shows the grade for that student and block combination.

Understand grade status

Grades have two dimensions of status:

  • Ungraded — the student has submitted work but no grade has been entered yet.
  • Graded but unpublished — a grade exists but the student cannot see it yet.
  • Published — the grade has been shared with the student.
Status Visible to students Typical next step
Ungraded No Review submission and enter a grade
Graded but unpublished No Moderate, then publish when the cohort is ready
Published Yes Unpublish only if you must correct grades or edit the block

Progress through the learning journey and published grades are related but not identical — a student can finish a block before a grade is published. See Monitor progress.

How to publish all grades

To share all entered grades with students at once:

In the Grades view, look for the Publish all Grades button near the top of the page.

Click it. A confirmation appears showing how many grades will be published.

Confirm to publish. Students can immediately see their grades in the Learning Journey.

Consider aligning publication with your module’s official grade-release policy and any communication to students — for example after an exam board or cohort-wide announcement.

How to unpublish grades

To take back shared grades (for example, to correct an error):

In the Grades view, click Unpublish Grades.

Confirm the action. The grades are hidden from students again and the content blocks become editable.

Use the filter controls above the grades grid to:

  • Search by student name or email.
  • Filter by content block type (for example, show only Assessment blocks).
  • Filter by role (to separate student groups).

Filtering helps large courses where a single grid would otherwise be overwhelming — for example when teaching assistants mark only Hand-in blocks or when you need to compare grades across parallel tutorial groups.

Best practices

  • Enter grades as you mark in the block overview; use the Grades tab for final audit before publication.
  • Keep grades unpublished until the full marking team agrees — especially when multiple graders work on different blocks.
  • Publish in one coordinated step with Publish all Grades rather than leaving some students with visible grades and others waiting without explanation.
  • After publishing, spot-check a few student learning-journey views to confirm grades appear where expected.
  • If you must edit block content after release, unpublish first, make corrections, then publish again when ready.
  • For unusual distributions, open content block analytics on the relevant block before discussing results with programme leads.

Common pitfalls

Pitfall What to do
Grades entered but never published Students see nothing — run Publish all Grades when marking is complete
Published too early, then block needs edits Unpublish Grades, edit the block, republish when ready
Empty cells for submitted work Return to Review submissions and grade for that block
Confusing LMS grades with CMS exams Formal module exams may live in My Exams — confirm with your exam office
Filtering hides rows you still need to mark Clear filters or switch block-type filter before final publication

FAQ

Are grades visible as soon as I enter them?

No. Grades are saved when entered but remain unpublished until you publish them — individually through block review or for the whole course with Publish all Grades.

Can I edit a content block after grades are published?

Not while grades stay published. Unpublish first, make your corrections, then publish again when ready.

Where do students see published grades?

In the Learning Journey for the course — not in the staff Grades view.

Is this the same as publishing grades in the CMS Exam Center?

No. This page covers course grades on learning-journey blocks. Formal exams in OrgHub use separate publish steps — see Publish grades and Grade and manage an exam.
