Continuing education (also called professional education, lifelong learning, or further education) covers shorter, flexible offerings that sit beside a university’s degree catalog — certificate courses, upskilling tracks, alumni programs, and other non-degree pathways. In FuxamCMS these offerings live under OrgHub → Management → Programs on a dedicated Continuing Education tab, with the same structural layers as study programs (program → versions → optional cohorts → members) but defaults tuned for flexible enrollment.
Why it matters
Most institutions run both long-cycle degree programs and shorter offerings for working professionals, alumni, or lifelong learners. Forcing every certificate or professional track into the same cohort-first degree machinery creates empty intake groups and confusing study plans. Continuing education exists so you can:
- Offer programs with rolling or flexible enrollment without mandatory cohorts
- Keep those offerings visible on a dedicated tab, separate from the degree catalog
- Still reuse curricula, module planning, and course planning where you need structure
- Optionally enable Has Cohorts when a program does need named intake waves
- Version offerings over time when content, objectives, or delivery rules change for new participants
In short: same OrgHub Programs area, defaults and reporting behavior tuned for lifelong-learning and certificate workflows.
How this fits into Fuxam
Continuing-education programs live beside study programs under OrgHub → Management → Programs. They connect to the academic catalog — modules, curricula, terms, and rooms for scheduled sessions — and to the same planning tools described in module planning.
Participant accounts come from User Management. Admissions for professional tracks may flow through Apply before staff enroll participants in CMS. Course delivery still runs through FuxamLMS once study plans and course access are in place.

How continuing education differs from degree study programs
In university practice, degree study programs usually admit students in structured intakes, generate multi-year study plans, and feed institutional reporting. Continuing education typically serves shorter cycles, mixed audiences (professionals, alumni, external learners), and more flexible start dates.

Continuing-education programs can still use cohorts when you enable Has Cohorts — for example, certificate waves that start together each semester. Leave cohorts off when participants join on a rolling basis and a program-level curriculum is enough.

How the layers work together
Think of continuing education as four nested layers. You do not always use every layer:
- Program — the catalog offering staff and learners recognize by name and code.
- Version — editions over time (for example, “2025 edition” after a curriculum refresh). Every program starts with an initial version.
- Cohort — optional named intake under a version, with dates and a curriculum version. Only when Has Cohorts is on.
- Members — participants added to a cohort (or enrolled directly when cohorts are off).

- Create a continuing-education program with a clear name, optional code, and the right Has Cohorts choice.

- If cohorts are on, create and manage cohorts under the correct version.
- Enroll participants (cohort members or direct program users).
- Use module planning and assign organizers so delivery is staffed and schedulable.

FAQ
Can a continuing-education program use cohorts?
Yes. Has Cohorts is disabled by default, but you can enable it when creating or updating the program if your workflow needs intake groups.
Is curriculum only available with cohorts?
When cohorts are disabled, Curriculum is available at the program level. That lets you structure offerings without maintaining empty cohort records. When cohorts are enabled, curriculum is typically assigned per cohort.
Do continuing-education programs support Module Planning?
Yes. After creation you can use Module Planning and Course Planning like other programs, then assign organizers and schedule with rooms as needed.
Why does my continuing-education program never appear in university statistics?
By design. University statistics are always disabled for continuing-education programs and cannot be turned on. Degree offerings that must appear in institutional exports should be study programs with statistics enabled.
How does this relate to Apply?
Apply handles applications and admissions decisions. CMS continuing-education enrollment is the academic placement step afterward (or alongside your institution’s handoff). Align program and cohort names so admitted learners land in the right offering.
