Create a course

Create a new institution course from OrgHub with name, description, tags, banner, icon, and appointment color — and understand what Fuxam provisions automatically.

Creating a course in OrgHub registers a new delivery offering in your institution catalog. The Create sheet collects identity and appearance settings — name, description, visual branding, tags, and calendar color — then Fuxam provisions the underlying course structure: hierarchy placement, communication lobby, default feature toggles, and inherited administrator access. Teachers and students encounter the result as an LMS course; administrators continue to manage it from the Courses table.

This workflow creates a regular institution course. Database-linked learning journey courses follow a separate path when you connect offerings to module versions — see Link courses to a database.

Why it matters

Every taught unit needs a container in Fuxam: a place for the learning journey, enrollments, calendar sessions, and grades. Creating the course administratively — before teachers build content — establishes the official record with a unique code, structural placement, and default capabilities. That separation mirrors how universities distinguish catalog registration (the offering exists) from course development (materials are built) from delivery (students are enrolled and teaching begins).

Starting from OrgHub rather than ad-hoc workarounds ensures course codes, tags, and layer inheritance stay consistent with User Management and your institution hierarchy.

How it fits

Before create Consider
Is this a brand-new offering? Create from scratch (this page)
Is it a repeat of last year’s course? Duplicate a course instead
Must it track against a module? Plan to link after creation — while the course is still empty
Who will teach it? Enroll staff after creation via Manage enrollments

Courses connect upstream to modules and study programs / cohorts when academic tracking matters; downstream to LMS content and journeys.

Before you start

  • Navigate to OrgHub → Management → Courses.
  • Confirm your role includes permission to create courses in course management — otherwise the Create action is hidden.
  • Decide on a clear course name convention — codes are generated from the name but names are what staff and students read daily.
  • Know whether institution booking/waitlists apply — capacity will be set later in Course settings; booking policy lives in institution settings.

How to open the create course sheet

Go to OrgHub → Management → Courses.

Select Create in the table toolbar (or use the empty-state Create button when no courses match your filters).

The Create a new course sheet opens.

You need permission to create courses in course management to see the create action. If it is missing, ask an administrator to review Roles and permissions.

How to fill in the form fields

The create sheet includes:

Field Required Notes
Banner No Cover image shown at the top of the course. Upload or replace via the banner area.
Icon No Course icon overlaid on the banner. Choose from the icon library or upload a custom image.
Course name Yes Display name for the course (up to 100 characters).
Course description No Short summary shown in course previews and listings.
Tags No Institution course tags for filtering and grouping in the Courses table.
Appointment color No Color used for this course on the calendar. Defaults to none.

Submit with Create. Fuxam validates the name before saving.

Course code behavior

The create form does not include a course code field. When you submit, Fuxam automatically generates a unique code from the course name on the server.

After creation:

  • The new course appears in the Courses table.
  • Open the Course code column to view or edit the assigned code inline.
  • If a course has no code yet, use Generate code in that column to create one.

Use Save on the unsaved-changes bar when you edit codes for multiple courses at once. Editing codes requires permission to update courses in course management (or write access on that course’s structure).

What Fuxam creates automatically

Saving a new course also sets up:

  • A course layer placed in your institution structure.
  • A course chat lobby for course communication.
  • Default course feature toggles (Learning Journey, Chat, Drive, and Calendar enabled).
  • Role inheritance from the parent structure layer, so administrators with structure access can manage the new course.

You can adjust details, capacity, and features afterward from the course’s Course Settings page — see Course settings.

Best practices

  • Use descriptive names that include term or cohort context when one module runs multiple parallel sections — for example, distinguishing “Microeconomics — Group A” from “Microeconomics — Group B.”
  • Duplicate for term rollover when the learning journey from a previous year should carry over unchanged; see Duplicate a course.
  • Link early if the offering must appear on cohort study plans — coordinate with Link courses to a database and module planning.
  • Set capacity and features before enrollment. Defaults are useful starting points, not a substitute for reviewing Course settings.
  • Do not skip enrollment. A created course is invisible to students until they are enrolled; teachers likewise need appropriate roles.

Common pitfalls

Pitfall Guidance
Expecting a course code field on the form Codes are server-generated; edit inline after creation
Creating when duplication would save time Use Duplicate to copy journey content
Assuming database tracking is automatic Link the course to a module version explicitly
Forgetting feature toggles Default features are on, but verify in Course settings before go-live
Cannot see Create You need permission to create courses — ask an administrator

FAQ

Can I create a course without create permission?

The Create action requires permission to create courses in course management. Users with only structure-scoped access may manage existing courses in their layer but cannot use the institution-wide create sheet unless granted that permission.

Is the course immediately visible to students?

No. Students see the course after enrollment. The course appears in the Courses table for administrators immediately after creation.

What is the difference between this and creating a module?

A module is a reusable academic unit in the Database catalog. A course is the delivery workspace. Many institutions link the two so progress in the LMS feeds academic records.
