Create a module

Add a new reusable unit of study to the OrgHub Database with an initial version, then configure ECTS, exams, and course template on the version page.

Creating a module adds a new reusable unit of study to your institution’s academic catalog. The create flow establishes the module’s shared identity (name and code) and an initial version. Academic settings such as ECTS credit points, attendance, and examination requirements are configured on that version afterward — not in the create sheet.

Use this when you need a new catalog entry that curricula, planning, and courses can reference. If you only need to revise credits or exams for an existing module, prefer adding a new version instead of creating a duplicate module.

Why it matters

A clean module catalog is the foundation of academic structure. Each module you create becomes a stable identity that can appear in multiple curricula, be planned for terms, and eventually be linked to delivery courses. Creating the identity carefully — especially a unique Module Code — avoids confusion later when several programs share the same unit of study.

In ECTS-based programs, modules are educational components with a coherent workload and learning outcomes. Creating the module record first gives you a place to attach that workload (credits), assessment rules, and a course template as the version matures.

How it fits

Step Where
Create identity and first version This page — OrgHub → Database → Modules
Configure ECTS, attendance, exams, course template Edit a module
Optionally group related modules Module groups
Place the version in a program Add modules to curriculum
Connect delivery Link module to course

Before you start

  • Confirm the module does not already exist under another name or code in OrgHub → Database → Modules.
  • Agree on the Module Code convention used by your institution (faculty prefix, numeric scheme, and so on).
  • Decide whether the first Version Name should follow a numbering scheme (1.0) or an academic year label (2025).
  • Know the intended ECTS value and examination shape from your examination regulations or module handbook — you will enter them on the version Details page after creation.
  • Know that credit points and examination requirements are set on the version Details page after creation.

How to create a module

Open the create dialog

Go to OrgHub → Database → Modules.

In the toolbar, select Module. This opens the Create Module sheet.

Fill in module details

Enter Module Name — the shared name for this module across all versions. This field is required.

Enter Module Code — an institution identifier (for example, ECON101). This field is required in the form and must be unique within your institution.

Optionally enter Initial Version Name — a label for the first version (for example, 1.0). If left blank, Fuxam assigns a default version label.

Select Create. Fuxam creates the module with an initial version and opens the module version page.

Field reference

Field Required Notes
Module Name Yes Shared identity across all versions
Module Code Yes in the form Institution identifier; must be unique within your institution
Initial Version Name No Label for the first version (for example, 1.0 or 2025); blank uses a Fuxam default

Worked example — create then configure

Scenario: The Faculty of Economics needs a new 5 ECTS module, Introduction to Microeconomics, code ECON110, for Winter 2025/26.

  1. Create the module with Module Name Introduction to Microeconomics, Module Code ECON110, and Initial Version Name 2025.
  2. On the version Details tab, set ECTS to 5, Attendance to the faculty rule (for example, 80%), and add the final examination requirement.
  3. On the Course tab, set a clear course title and feature defaults for when the module is linked later.
  4. Only then add the module version to the curriculum for Semester 1.

If next year the module becomes 6 ECTS, keep ECON110 and create version 2026 — do not create a second module with a similar name.

What happens next

After creation, you are redirected to the new module’s version page. From there you can:

  • Set ECTS and attendance on the Details tab.
  • Configure examination requirements so assessment rules are clear before curriculum placement.
  • Configure the linked course template on the Course tab.
  • Optionally attach the module to a module group for catalog organization.
  • Add additional versions when requirements change between academic years.

Continue with Edit a module to complete the academic configuration before placing the module in a curriculum.

Best practices

  • Prefer one module identity per distinct unit of study; use versions for year-to-year changes rather than creating parallel modules with similar names.
  • Keep Module Code stable and unique — codes are how staff recognize modules across curricula and planning.
  • Set a meaningful Initial Version Name from the start so the version selector stays readable as history grows.
  • Configure ECTS and examination requirements before adding the module to a curriculum, so curriculum credit totals and assessment expectations are accurate.
  • Align ECTS with your module handbook and examination regulations before the first curriculum placement — correcting credits later often forces a new version and curriculum remapping.

Common pitfalls

  • Creating a second module instead of a new version when only credits or exams changed — this fragments the catalog and breaks continuity for reporting.
  • Leaving ECTS and examination requirements empty and adding the module to a curriculum too early — fix on the version Details tab first.
  • Reusing a Module Code that already exists — the form requires uniqueness within your institution.
  • Naming the first version vaguely (v1) when your institution already uses year labels (2025) — inconsistent labels make curriculum editing harder later.

FAQ

Can I set ECTS while creating the module?

No. ECTS, attendance, examination requirements, and other academic settings are configured on the version Details page after you select Create.

Is Module Code really optional?

The code is an institution identifier in meaning, but it is required in the create form and must be unique within your institution.

What if I need a different configuration next year?

Keep the same module and create a new version. Point new curricula or course links at the new version; leave earlier versions intact for cohorts already using them.

Should I create a module or a module group?

Create a module for each distinct unit of study. Use a module group only when you want to organize several related modules together for catalog or planning purposes.
