Calendar & attendance

Course schedules, appointments, attendance recording, the attendance matrix, and student check-in in FuxamLMS — and how they relate to the Base calendar.

Calendar and attendance in FuxamLMS is how a course turns its teaching plan into a living schedule: sessions on the calendar, participants invited, presence recorded, and patterns reviewed over the term. Teachers and organizers create and manage course appointments; students check in with a key, QR code, or rotating QR token; and staff use the attendance matrix to see who attended what across every session.

This area sits inside the LMS course shell. It is the course-scoped counterpart to the institution-wide Base calendar: same underlying appointments, different lens. The Base calendar shows everything you are invited to across the institution; the course Calendar tab shows only that course’s sessions and is where attendance work usually happens for that offering.

Why it matters

Universities treat presence as both a pedagogical signal and, in many programmes, a formal requirement. Without a shared schedule and a reliable attendance record:

  • Students miss sessions because the “official” time lived in a slide deck or chat thread.
  • Teachers cannot prove who was present when a participation rule or exam eligibility depends on it.
  • Administrators lack a consistent view across appointments for audits, make-up decisions, or early-warning outreach.

Fuxam connects those needs: appointments are the schedule; attendance statuses and check-in are the record; the matrix is the overview.

How this fits into Fuxam

Related area Relationship
Base calendar Institution-wide schedule; aggregates appointments from every context you can access
Create an appointment Full appointment creator from the Base calendar (rooms, recurrence, cohorts, and more)
Course Settings The course Calendar feature must be enabled for the tab to appear
Open a course Course navigation is how you reach the course Calendar tab
Rooms Bookable spaces that can be assigned when creating appointments
Check in with a QR code Student check-in on Fuxam Mobile
Show a check-in QR code Staff display a QR code from the mobile app
Manage attendance Staff review and update attendance on mobile

Base calendar vs course calendar

Base calendar Course calendar
Where Sidebar Calendar (Fuxam Base) Course Calendar tab inside a course
Scope All appointments you are invited to or responsible for, across courses and contexts Appointments for that course only
Typical use Personal timetable, institution-wide planning, filtering across courses Teaching a single course: create sessions, take attendance, open the matrix
Feature gate Calendar feature enabled for the institution Calendar feature enabled for the course in Course Settings

Both views look at the same appointment objects. Creating a course appointment puts it on the course calendar and on the personal calendars of invited participants in the Base calendar. Prefer the course calendar when you are running attendance for that offering; prefer the Base calendar when you need a cross-course day or week view. See View your calendar and View the calendar.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Students view appointments on their calendar, check in when the teacher activates check-in, and may see their own attendance reflected after the fact.
  • Teachers and organizers with permission to create and edit course appointments manage the schedule; with permission to record and change attendance they mark or correct statuses and use the matrix.
  • Users with permission to view attendance only can see records but cannot change them.
  • Administrators typically enable Calendar at the institution and course level and define rooms that appointments can book.

Where to start

A practical order for a term:

  1. Enable Calendar in Course Settings if the tab is missing.
  2. Create appointments for the course (or create them from the Base calendar and invite the course audience).
  3. Before or during each session, take attendance or open check-in — Take attendance and Check in.
  4. Periodically review patterns in the attendance matrix.
