Open a course
Find a course from Home, Pinned Courses, or search, then navigate Learning Journey, Calendar, Chat, Users, Analytics, Drive, and Course Settings.
Opening a course takes you into the LMS shell for that offering — the place where the learning journey, calendar, participants, grades, and optional chat or Drive come together. From there, what you see depends on which course features are enabled and what your role permits.
You can reach any of your courses from the My Courses tab on your home screen, from the Pinned Courses section in the sidebar, or by searching with the global search.
Why it matters
Universities run dozens or hundreds of concurrent courses. A reliable way to open the right shell — and to understand its tabs — keeps students from missing content and teachers from hunting for grades, attendance, or settings across the platform. The course navigation is the map of everything that belongs to that cohort for the term.
How it fits
- Pin frequently used courses for one-click access — see Pin courses.
- Courses themselves are created and enrolled in Course management; opening them here is the day-to-day LMS step.
- Bundled offerings may grant access to several courses at once — see Course bundles.
Open a course
Click Home in the sidebar, then select the My Courses tab.
Find the course in the list and click its name to open it.
Or, if the course is pinned, click its name directly in the sidebar under Pinned Courses.
Course navigation
Once you are inside a course, the sidebar highlights a course navigation menu. The items you see depend on which features the course has enabled and what your role permits:
| Section | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Learning Journey | The full course content — the structured sequence of content blocks. Teachers see the editing interface here; students see their progress view. |
| Calendar | Course-specific appointments and events |
| Chat | The course message thread |
| Users | A list of all participants (sub-tab: Users) and a grade overview (sub-tab: Grades) |
| Analytics | Engagement and participation metrics |
| Drive | Shared files for the course |
| Course Settings | Feature toggles and course configuration |
Where each section leads in the Handbook
| Section | Deeper documentation |
|---|---|
| Learning Journey | Student view, Teacher view, Learning journey |
| Calendar | Calendar and attendance |
| Chat | Chat |
| Users / Grades | View and publish course grades |
| Analytics | Course analytics, Content block analytics |
| Drive | Use the course Drive |
| Course Settings | Configure course features |
The Learning Journey section
The Learning Journey section works differently depending on your role:
Students see their progress view — content blocks, completion status, due dates, and a progress bar. See Follow the learning journey (students).
Teachers and editors see the full editing interface with three views (Table, Student, and Path) to build and manage course content. See Build the learning journey (teachers).
The Users section and Grades
Clicking Users in the course navigation opens a page with two sub-tabs:
- Users — all enrolled participants with their roles and status.
- Grades — a grade overview for all gradable content blocks. Teachers can enter and publish grades from here.
See View and publish course grades for instructions on working with grades.
Best practices
- Confirm you opened the correct term or cohort course before editing content or publishing grades.
- Teachers: after opening a new course, check Course Settings so Calendar, Chat, and Drive match how you plan to teach.
- Students: pin active courses and use Continue learning in the journey rather than hunting for the last open block.
Common pitfalls
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| A tab you expect is missing | Feature may be off in Course Settings, or you lack permission (Analytics, Course Settings) |
| Course not in My Courses | You may not be enrolled, or the course may be archived in CMS |
| Empty Learning Journey | Content may still be draft (students only see published blocks), or SCORM source may apply |
FAQ
Can I open a course I am not enrolled in?
No — you only see courses you have access to through enrollment (or equivalent institutional access). Administrators manage membership in Course management.
Why do I see different tabs than a classmate or colleague?
Tabs depend on course feature toggles and on your role and permissions. Students typically do not see Course Settings or Analytics.
Is Course Settings here the same as in OrgHub?
The LMS Course Settings tab focuses on features, page visibility, and learning journey source for that course. OrgHub also has Course settings with additional administrative options (details, capacity, and related configuration).
