Edit a curriculum
Rename a curriculum, update tags and study program links, and edit the current version's modules and structure.
Editing a curriculum covers both the curriculum record (name, tags, connected study program) and the current version’s structure and module items. Metadata edits keep lists and associations accurate; version edits change what students following that version are expected to complete. Knowing which layer you are changing prevents accidental impact on enrolled cohorts.
Why it matters
Program offices constantly refine names, tags, and module placements. Small metadata fixes (rename, retag, reconnect a study program) should not force a new version. Structural or credit-rule changes on a version that cohorts already use can affect student study plans when saves propagate. Editing thoughtfully — and choosing a new version when you need a clean break — keeps past and future intakes stable.
How it fits
| What you edit | Scope | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Curriculum metadata | The curriculum record | Rename, tags, connect or disconnect a study program |
| Current version content | One curriculum version | Module table, Curriculum Structure, version settings |
Related workflows: add modules, elective groups, curriculum structure, and cohort curriculum management.
Before you start
- Confirm whether you need to edit the active version or create a new version for an upcoming intake.
- If the version is already assigned to cohorts, review who would be affected before saving large structural changes.
- Prefer renaming and tagging from the Curricula table when you only need list organization.
- Confirm the header Version selector shows the snapshot you intend to change.
How to open a curriculum
Go to OrgHub → Database → Curricula.
Select a curriculum row to open its version overview page.
Use the version selector in the header to switch between curriculum versions if needed.
Edit curriculum metadata
From the Curricula table you can:
- Rename a selected curriculum using the rename action in the selection toolbar.
- Add or remove tags to organize curricula in lists and filters.
- Connect or disconnect a study program association.
These changes apply to the curriculum record and do not automatically create a new version.
Edit the current version
On the curriculum version page, edit the active version’s content:
- Module table — update module assignments, versions, study periods, focuses, elective groups, and credit points per row.
- Curriculum Structure — manage study periods, focuses, elective groups, and election mode settings on the structure page.
- Settings — review version-level metadata such as total credit points.
Changes on the version page are staged until you save. An unsaved-changes bar appears when edits are pending.
What kind of change is this?
| Change type | Prefer | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog hygiene | Metadata edit | Rename curriculum, retag, reconnect study program |
| Typo or single-slot fix on a live version | Careful in-place version edit | Correct a wrong study period on one module |
| New regulation / intake year | New curriculum version | Replace three core modules and change elective rules for next autumn |
| One cohort exception | Cohort Disconnect (see assign / manage cohort curriculum) | Extra local module for one intake only |
Best practices
- Use metadata edits (name, tags, program link) for catalog hygiene; use version edits for academic content.
- When a regulation or accreditation change applies only to new intakes, create a new curriculum version rather than rewriting the one older cohorts still reference.
- Save in logical batches — finish term mapping or elective group changes before leaving the page so the unsaved-changes bar does not hide incomplete work.
- After structural edits, spot-check a cohort’s Curriculum tab (see Manage cohort curriculum) if that version is in use.
- Re-check credit totals per study period after moving modules between terms.
Common pitfalls
- Editing the wrong version because the header selector was left on an older snapshot.
- Making large module swaps on a live version without reviewing propagation options for enrolled students.
- Expecting a rename or tag change to create a new version — it does not; version history is managed separately.
- Changing elective rules in place when only future cohorts should see the new rules.
FAQ
Does renaming a curriculum create a new version?
No. Rename, tags, and study program connect/disconnect apply to the curriculum record and do not automatically create a new version.
Where do I change elective rules?
Open Curriculum Structure on the curriculum version page to manage elective groups and election mode settings. See Elective groups.
What if I have unsaved changes?
An unsaved-changes bar appears when edits are pending on the version page. Save before switching away if you want to keep those edits.
Can I edit study periods after modules are placed?
Yes, but remapping many rows is harder than defining periods first. If you rename or reorder periods, review the Term column on the module table afterward.
