Bonus points and grade rounding
Convert raw points and bonus marks into schema grades, and align institutional rounding policy with academic ruleset rounding and rating schemas in the Exam Center.
Examiners often mark scripts in raw points, sometimes with bonus points, then map the result onto an official grade scale. In FuxamCMS, graders enter the rating-schema grade (or a pass/fail / participation outcome) on the attempt tab — they do not replace your institution’s conversion table. This chapter explains how bonus and rounding practice fit next to documented Exam Center scales and ruleset rounding behavior.
Why it matters
Ambiguous bonus or rounding rules are a common source of grade appeals:
- Two examiners award the same raw score but convert differently to 2.7 vs 3.0
- Bonus points push a student across the 4.0 pass boundary — or do not, depending on local policy
- Module averages use different rounding than individual sittings
Aligning conversion tables with rating schemas and ruleset rounding behavior keeps Exam Center marks comparable and auditable.
How it fits
| Layer | Role |
|---|---|
| Marking session | Award base points and any allowed bonus (domain / local process) |
| Conversion | Map adjusted points or percentages to an official grade |
| Exam type | Graded rating mode so a schema control appears |
| Rating schema | Allowed labels and values (for example 1.0–5.0 or A–F) |
| Ruleset | Effective schema, weights, and rounding behavior |
| Publish | Student-visible result after publish grades |
Key concepts
Bonus points (domain)
In university practice, bonus points are extra marks awarded under published rules (for example mid-term quizzes, optional tasks, or examiner discretion within a ceiling). They usually:
- Raise the raw total before conversion to a grade, or
- Raise the percentage of maximum points used for a percentage-based band
They are policy, not a separate Exam Center rating mode. The exam type remains Graded (or Pass or fail if the assessment is binary). Document whether bonus can lift a fail to a pass — statutes differ.
Rounding (documented Fuxam + domain)
On an academic ruleset version, Rounding behavior can be set to:
| Option | Meaning (documented) |
|---|---|
| Generic decimal rounding | Standard decimal rounding rules for calculated results |
| Rating-schema-based rounding | Rounding guided by the rating schema’s defined steps |
Domain statutes often also specify how intermediate averages snap to German thirds (1.0, 1.3, 1.7, …). Choose ruleset rounding to match that statute, and ensure the schema contains every official step examiners may need.
Pass percentage on schemas
When you create a rating schema, you set a pass percentage threshold. Keep that threshold consistent with your conversion table (for example 50% of max points → lowest pass grade 4.0 on a German scale).
Worked examples
Example 1 — Bonus lifts points across the pass line
Domain scenario: Max 100 points; pass at 50; German value-based schema; bonus allowed up to 5 points from mid-term tasks.
| Student | Base points | Bonus | Adjusted | Converted grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 48 | 0 | 48 | 5.0 (fail) |
| B | 48 | 3 | 51 | 4.0 (pass) |
| C | 92 | 5 | 97 | 1.0 |
Examiners enter 5.0, 4.0, or 1.0 in the Graded control — not the raw point totals. Confirm whether your statute allows bonus to change a fail into a pass before publishing this pattern.
Example 2 — Percentage bands after bonus
Domain scenario: Percentage-based schema; bands must total 100%.
| Adjusted % of max | Schema band entered |
|---|---|
| 92% | A (90–100) |
| 84% | B (80–89) |
| 61% | D (60–69) |
| 55% | F (0–59) if fail starts below 60 |
If bonus points change the percentage, recompute before selecting the band.
Example 3 — Rounding an average to German thirds
Domain scenario: Module combines two Graded sittings; average computes to 2.15.
| Statute rule (example) | Rounded official grade |
|---|---|
| Round to nearest third toward better grade | 2.0 |
| Round to nearest third toward worse grade | 2.3 |
| Snap using schema steps only | Pick the schema row your ruleset rounding intends |
Configure rounding behavior on the ruleset version so combined marks follow the same rule for every cohort on that version. Individual attempt tabs still store each sitting’s entered schema grade separately — see Attempt lifecycle and Grade & manage an exam.
Example 4 — ECTS letters from points
Convert points → percentage → ECTS letter row (A–F), optionally with numeric value behind each letter for averages. Enter the letter (or its value) from the Graded schema — see Configure grading scale.
How to align Fuxam with your bonus and rounding policy
Publish an institutional points-to-grade (and bonus) table that matches your Prüfungsordnung.
Build a rating schema whose rows match every official outcome examiners may enter (full German thirds, ECTS letters, or percentage bands totaling 100%).
Set pass percentage on the schema to match the conversion table’s pass line.
On each relevant ruleset version, choose rounding behavior (generic decimal vs rating-schema-based) and assign the grading schema.
Ensure exam types for scored assessments use Graded mode, then grade and publish in My Exams using the schema control.
Weights and combined marks
Ruleset versions also define module weight and final weight (must sum to 100%). Module examination requirements can carry a weight percentage and a final exam flag when the exam type is attached. Treat bonus and rounding as per-sitting conversion first; then let documented weights combine module vs final contributions. Do not invent ad hoc averages outside the ruleset and schema design.
Best practices
- Write the bonus ceiling down — maximum bonus, eligible activities, and whether bonus can create a pass from a fail.
- One conversion table per scale — do not maintain conflicting Excel sheets per chair.
- Schema completeness — include 1.3 / 1.7 / … if statutes use thirds; otherwise examiners cannot enter the official mark.
- Change rounding via new ruleset versions when cohorts already have published grades under the old rule.
- Calibrate co-examiners before bulk grading — see Grade submissions.
Common pitfalls
- Entering a “rounded” grade that is not a row in the schema.
- Applying bonus after conversion instead of before (or vice versa) inconsistently across the cohort.
- Assuming ruleset rounding rewrites already published attempt grades — treat live grades carefully; prefer new versions for policy shifts.
- Using Pass or fail mode when the assessment actually needs a numeric average later.
FAQ
Does Fuxam store raw points and bonus separately from the grade?
Day-to-day Exam Center grading records the outcome via the exam type’s rating mode and effective schema (or pass/fail / participation). Raw points and bonus are handled in your marking process and conversion table before you select that outcome.
Where is rounding configured?
On the academic ruleset version under grading configuration — generic decimal or rating-schema-based rounding. See Edit a ruleset.
Can bonus points use Participation mode?
No. Participation means attended / did not attend. Scored work with bonus belongs on a Graded (or, if truly binary after conversion, Pass or fail) exam type.
