Auto-correct and points on interactive elements

Enable auto-correct on Workbench interactive elements so Fuxam scores student answers automatically on submission — and add custom feedback for wrong answers.

When you add an interactive element to a Workbench — such as a Multiple Choice, Single Choice, Matching, Rankable, or Vocabulary question — you can enable Auto-correct so that Fuxam evaluates each student’s answers automatically the moment they submit the Workbench. You can also assign points to each element and write a custom incorrect-answer reply that students see when they get something wrong.

Auto-correct is per-element: you choose which questions are scored automatically and which you prefer to grade manually through Review submissions and grade.

Why it matters

Formative exercises benefit from instant feedback — students learn more when they see which answers were right or wrong immediately after submitting, rather than waiting days for manual grading. Auto-correct handles that automatically for objective question types, freeing you to focus manual review time on open-ended or qualitative work.

Points let you weight questions differently within the same Workbench. Combined with auto-correct, they give students a score the moment they submit, without any instructor action.

Text Input and Code Block support points but not auto-correct — answers must be reviewed and scored manually.

Key concepts

Term	Meaning
Auto-correct	Fuxam evaluates a student’s answer against the correct answer(s) you defined and marks it correct or incorrect on submission.
Points	The maximum score a student can earn for a correct answer on that element.
Incorrect-answer reply	A custom message shown to the student under an element when auto-correct marks it wrong — useful for hints or explanations.
Auto-correct toggle	The switch on each interactive element in edit mode that enables or disables auto-correct for that element.

How to enable auto-correct on an element

Open the Workbench in edit mode.

Click on an interactive element (Multiple Choice, Single Choice, Matching, Rankable, or Vocabulary) to select it.

In the element’s settings panel, find the Auto-correct toggle and turn it on.

Make sure the correct answer(s) are defined for the element — auto-correct uses these to evaluate student responses.

The document saves automatically.

How to assign points

Select the element in edit mode.

In the element’s settings panel, enter a number in the Points field.

The document saves automatically.

Points apply to all supported element types, including Text Input and Code Block (where you score manually). Leave points at 0 if you do not want the element to contribute to the student’s score.

How to add an incorrect-answer reply

Select the element in edit mode.

In the element’s settings panel, type your message in the Incorrect answer reply field.

The document saves automatically.

The reply is shown to the student below the element after submission, only when their answer is marked incorrect. Leave it blank if you prefer not to show additional feedback.

What students see

When a student submits the Workbench:

Elements with auto-correct enabled are evaluated immediately.
Correct answers are highlighted in green.
Incorrect answers are highlighted in red.
If you wrote an incorrect-answer reply, it appears below the element.
The student’s total score (sum of points for correct elements) is shown.

Students cannot change their answers after submission — the Workbench is locked once submitted.

Best practices

Define the correct answer(s) for every element before enabling auto-correct — if no correct answer is set, the element cannot be scored.
Use points to reflect question difficulty or importance: weight harder questions more heavily.
Keep incorrect-answer replies concise and actionable — one or two sentences that direct students to a resource or concept.
For questions that require judgment (open-ended text, code output), leave auto-correct off and score them manually in Review submissions and grade.
Preview the Workbench in student view (see View as a student) to confirm auto-correct feedback looks as expected before publishing.

Common pitfalls

Issue	What to do
Auto-correct toggle is missing	The element type does not support auto-correct (Text Input, Code Block, Heading, Image, Audio). Score it manually.
Student score is 0 despite correct answers	Check that Points is set to a value greater than 0 on each element.
Incorrect-answer reply shows for correct answers	This should not happen — if you see it, verify the correct answer is saved correctly in the element settings.
Auto-correct not firing on submission	Confirm the Auto-correct toggle is on and the Workbench was fully submitted (not just navigated away from).

FAQ

Can I change auto-correct settings after students have submitted?

Yes — you can update element settings at any time in edit mode. However, changing the correct answer or toggling auto-correct after submissions does not retroactively re-score existing submissions. Re-score those manually in Review submissions and grade.

Can students see their score before submitting?

No. Scores and auto-correct feedback are only shown after the student submits the Workbench.

Does auto-correct replace manual grading?

Auto-correct handles objective question types (Multiple Choice, Single Choice, Matching, Rankable, Vocabulary). For Text Input, Code Block, or any element where you turned auto-correct off, you still need to grade manually in Review submissions and grade.

What happens if I leave the Points field at 0?

The element is not counted toward the student’s total score. Auto-correct still runs and shows correct/incorrect highlighting — it just does not add points.
