Participation and ungraded completion
Use Participation and Pass or fail rating modes for attendance-style, competence-gate, and ungraded completion requirements — without forcing a numeric grading scale.
Not every examination requirement needs a German 1.0–5.0 mark or an ECTS letter. Many modules require proof of participation, a pass/fail competence gate, or another ungraded completion outcome. In FuxamCMS, those patterns map to exam-type rating modes — especially Participation and Pass or fail — so My Exams still tracks attempts and publishing without inventing a fake numeric scale.
Why it matters
Forcing a full grading schema onto attendance or binary checks creates noise:
- Examiners waste time choosing among 1.0–5.0 when only “done / not done” matters
- Averages and ECTS grade reporting become meaningless for that requirement
- Students misread a “3.0” as academic performance when the statute only required presence

Key concepts
Participation mode
Participation means the student is evaluated on whether they took part — not on a differentiated performance score. In the Exam Center grading control, staff typically choose participation or no participation.
Common university uses:
- Mandatory seminar or tutorial attendance recorded as an examination requirement
- Colloquium presence without a mark
- Intermediate portfolio check-ins that only confirm engagement
No rating schema is required.
Pass or fail mode
Pass or fail is still binary, but it certifies competence or sufficiency, not mere presence. Graders see a pass / fail selector.
Common university uses:
- Lab safety or clinical readiness gates
- Practical skills checklists
- Some oral or workshop assessments where the statute only allows bestanden / nicht bestanden
No rating schema is required.
Ungraded completion (domain framing)
“Ungraded completion” in examination regulations usually means the requirement must be fulfilled for module progress, but no differentiated grade appears on the transcript. In Fuxam, model that with:

Formative vs summative
Participation and pass/fail requirements in the Exam Center are still often summative for progression (the module will not complete without them). Pure formative classroom quizzes that never enter examination regulations usually belong in teaching tools, not as exam types — see Assessment formats.

How attempts and fails still apply
Binary and participation outcomes still sit inside the attempt economy:
- A fail or no participation on a counted sitting can consume failed-attempt budget depending on institutional process and ruleset limits
- Auto reattempt vs reassessment period still comes from the exam type
- Permanent failure follows the same attempt lifecycle narrative as graded exams
Do not assume “ungraded” means “unlimited retries.”
How to set up a participation or pass/fail exam type
Confirm the regulation truly does not require a differentiated grade.
Create an exam type (or edit an existing one) and set rating mode to Participation or Pass or fail.
Choose the submission type that matches delivery (file upload, exam, presentation, custom form, and so on).
Set attempt workflow, scheduling, and optional alternative-request / topic-confirmation settings like any other type.
Attach the type to the module version; when students are enrolled, grade on the attempt tab with the binary selector and publish when ready.
Best practices
- Name templates clearly — for example “Seminar attendance — participation” vs “Lab safety — pass/fail”.
- Keep graded finals separate — do not overload one type to serve both attendance and the scored Klausur.
- Use custom forms for checklists when evidence must be structured — Custom exam forms.
- Train staff that Participation is not a soft Graded scale — there is no 1.0–5.0 behind it.
- Align weights — if the requirement carries a module weight percentage, confirm how ungraded completion interacts with module / final weights on the ruleset.
Common pitfalls
- Creating a German numeric schema “just in case” for an attendance requirement.
- Using Participation when examiners must judge competence (use Pass or fail or Graded).
- Mixing attempt workflows between a participation requirement and a graded requirement on the same module.
- Forgetting that published participation / pass-fail outcomes are still visible to students after publish.
FAQ
Do Participation exams use rating schemas?
No. Only Graded mode uses rating schemas. Participation and Pass or fail use fixed selectors.
Can a participation requirement still appear in My Exams?
Yes. Once the exam type is attached to a module version and students are enrolled, the instance appears in My Exams like other exams.
Is ungraded the same as formative?
Not necessarily. An ungraded completion requirement can still be mandatory for module completion (summative for progression). Formative feedback that never enters examination regulations often stays outside Exam Center.
What if we later need a numeric grade for the same assessment?
Prefer creating a new Graded exam type for future cohorts rather than flipping rating mode mid-term on a heavily used template. See Edit an exam type.
