Create a study program

Add a new study program in OrgHub that represents a degree or qualification — with an initial version, optional code, cohort settings, and statistics configuration.

Create a study program to represent a degree or qualification your institution offers — the lasting academic product students apply to and enroll in. Examples include a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Arts, or a postgraduate certificate. Fuxam creates the program together with an initial version so you can immediately add cohorts or enroll users without a separate versioning step.

In university practice, founding a program is an institutional decision: naming the award, coding it for reporting, classifying its level (for example Bachelor or Master), and deciding whether students will be organized by intake. The create form captures the foundational choices so later planning, curriculum assignment, admissions, and exam policy have a stable parent record.

Why it matters

Without a study program record:

There is nowhere to hang versions when accreditation or examination regulations change year over year.
Cohorts and enrollments lack a shared academic home for the qualification.
Apply application programs and reporting cannot point at a first-class offering.
Academic rulesets have no program-level place to attach default exam policy.

Creating the program early — even before every curriculum module is finalized — establishes the container. You refine degree details, program type, and connected curricula afterward.

Before you start

Confirm you have Create Study Programs permission.
Decide the display name of the qualification and whether you need a custom Study Program Code (for SIS alignment, accreditation codes, or internal reporting).
Choose whether the program will use cohorts (typical for degree intakes) or direct enrollment without cohort groups.
Optionally prepare a label for the Initial Version Name (for example, “2024 intake”) so the first version is recognizable in the selector.
Know whether this belongs on the Study Programs tab or as continuing education (flexible certificates often use that path instead).

Open the create form

Go to OrgHub → Management → Programs and open the Study Programs tab.

Select Study Program in the toolbar to open the Create Study Program panel.

Fill in the form

Enter Study Program Name — the display name for the program. Use the name students and staff will recognize in lists, admissions, and reporting (for example, “Bachelor of Science in Computer Science”).

Optionally enter Study Program Code. Leave blank to use an auto-generated code, or enter a custom code that matches your institutional catalog or external systems.

Optionally enter Initial Version Name — the label for the first program version (for example, “2024 intake”). A clear version name makes later version switching and reporting easier.

Configure Has Cohorts — when enabled, students are organized into cohorts within the program. When disabled, students enroll directly without cohort groups. Prefer cohorts when intakes share curriculum versions, start dates, and study-plan generation.

Configure Has Statistics — when enabled, the program is included in statistics exports and reporting features. Enable this for programs you need in institutional reporting and planning monitoring style oversight.

Select Create to save. The program and its initial version are created.

After creation, open the program to:

Set program type, objective, degree metadata, connected curricula, responsible users, tuition defaults, and Academic rulesets on the version Settings tab — see Edit a study program
Add cohorts (when Has Cohorts is enabled) or enroll users directly from the Users tab

Worked example: founding a Bachelor program

Your faculty approves a new Bachelor of Data Science:

Create the study program named Bachelor of Data Science, code BSc-DS, initial version 2026 intake, Has Cohorts and Has Statistics on.
In Settings, set program type to Bachelor, add a short objective, connect the draft curriculum, and assign responsible users.
Attach the intended academic ruleset for bachelor attempt limits.
When curriculum v1 is ready, create cohort DS WS 2026/27.
Link the study program (and cohort) in an application program for the winter admissions cycle.

Best practices

Name programs for the lasting offering, not a single intake (“Bachelor of Nursing”, not “Nursing Fall 2024”). Put intake detail in the version and cohort names.
Align Study Program Code with accreditation or SIS codes early; changing codes later can confuse exports and integrations.
Turn Has Cohorts on if you expect multiple start dates, curriculum pinning per intake, or Apply placement into specific cohorts.
Create the matching curriculum (or identify an existing one) before you create the first cohort, so assignment is ready at intake setup.
If Apply will recruit for this offering, coordinate with admissions so the application program can link to the new study program once it exists.
After creation, set program type and degree-related Settings so catalogs and reporting classify the qualification correctly.

FAQ

Does creating a program also create a curriculum?

No. The program and its initial version are created. Curricula live in Academic structure → Curricula and are assigned later — typically when you create a cohort or manage cohort curriculum.

Can I change Has Cohorts later?

You can update configuration from the program version Settings tab when editing the study program. Plan the initial choice carefully: switching models after enrollments exist can complicate how students are grouped.

What happens if I leave Study Program Code blank?

Fuxam uses an auto-generated code. Enter a custom code only when you need a specific institutional identifier.

Where do I set Bachelor vs Master?

After creation, open the program version Settings and set program type (and related degree metadata) in Program configuration / Details. See Edit a study program.
